Disposal of expired food products

Expired food products are the result of too long storage of food, drinks and semi-finished products. Some products may be consumed by humans and animals, but the bulk must be disposed of.

Where’s the problem?

The difficulty of «delay» is that after the end of the warranty period, the food mass poses a biological and chemical hazard:

after a theoretically calculated period, the natural decomposition of organics begins, which leads to the appearance of unpleasant odor and the appearance of an inedible substance;

bacteria enter the products, which aggravate the situation;

This does not apply to «simple» products, but those produced with the addition of preservatives, dyes and other additives can adversely affect the environment. Such a nutrient environment becomes the soil for the development of not only beneficial, but already harmful bacteria, mold. In most cases, combustible gases are released, ammonia is very dangerous.

The transition of bacteria and mold from such products to other suitable ones is fraught with spoilage and possible infection of the nutrient. Poisoning (to severe degrees of intoxication), the development of diseases of the digestive system — a minimum that is not pleasant to everyone.

What should I do?

The main method of detecting expired food products is regular checks. If such a product is discovered, it is written off, and the product itself is transferred for disposal.

You can’t throw it on the trash: there the product will continue to decompose and contribute to the spread of mold and bacteria. Disposal should be performed by professionals — those who have appropriate information and technological training.

For example, with regard to «delay,» the following methods of processing are involved:

processing for fodder for birds and animals (subject to appropriate permission and state expertise);

composting — creation of biomass suitable for growing plants in it;

grinding and use as a solid filler in construction;

physical destruction — burning and burial at a special landfill.
