8 tricks of food manufacturers that you don’t know about.

These days supermarkets can boast of an abundance of products. A large number of consumers buy products that, for example, are conspicuous by bright packaging or have been repeatedly noticed in advertising. But do you know what exactly you put in the shopping cart? After all, if you look closely, it quickly becomes clear that consumers are deceived quite often.

The food industry uses tricks that most of us have never heard of. For example, some additives should not even be listed in the ingredients list.

1. Cheese

When buying cheese, you should be careful, because only we produce about 100,000 tons of analog cheese annually. This so-called «cheese» consists of water, vegetable fat, milk protein, starch, flavor enhancers and is increasingly used in finished products, bakeries and gastronomy, as it is 40% cheaper due to low-quality ingredients. So be sure to carefully read the list of ingredients! And if you buy a casserole with cheese or a «pizza mix», it is very likely that analog cheese will be included there.

With grated cheese, the differences for the layman are practically not noticeable. When preparing one piece of cheese, in addition to the list of ingredients, you should pay attention to the color, texture and even distribution of holes throughout the piece.

2. Meat

The business of low-quality meat is still extremely profitable for supermarkets. And a look at the assortment of leading supermarkets shows that the range of high-quality fresh meat is still limited. But good meat can’t really be sold at a low cost, which many producers admit. Protein obtained from slaughterhouse waste and water are injected into the meat to make it heavier. In order not to hang special labels, the food industry also uses a trick here: it places meat, for example, in a pepper marinade and writes «marinade» on the label.

When buying meat, first of all pay attention to its shape and color. Good quality meat is pink, not bright red or even brown. Also pay attention to the bold stripes: they should be shiny and thin. In addition, good meat will return to its original shape when pressed and should not stick to the fingers.

3. Red color

Have you ever wondered where some products get a bright red color from? Vegans will not particularly like the answer to this question, because the dye is obtained from crushed insects, cochineals. Synthetic dyes such as cochineal red

A (E124), often used as a substitute. But this substance is not harmless and is classified as dangerous to health and potentially carcinogenic in countries such as Norway, Finland and the USA. But it is still approved in our country and in many European countries, sometimes with the restriction that companies must print a warning on the label that products stained with cochineal can impair the activity and attention of children.

4. Honey

When you stand in front of a shelf with honey, it’s easy to be amazed at the assortment of different products and get confused about which honey to choose. But honey is hardly always present on this shelf. As the global bee population continues to decline due to pesticides, environmental pollution and the gradual reduction of habitat, producers have to resort to tricks and imitate honey with rice syrup. Fake honey, which mainly comes from China, is difficult to distinguish from the real one.

To recognize quality honey, make sure it comes from European countries or locally produced. Avoid using plastic packaging, as there is always a risk of toxic ingredients in it, which is a risk to your health. In addition, it is better to buy cloudy honey, and also compare different varieties of honey of the same type beforehand to find out if the honey was mixed.

5. Fruit ice and ice cream

In ice cream, you should always pay attention to the list of ingredients. Berry-flavored varieties, such as strawberry ice cream, often do not contain any natural ingredients or fruits. The fruity taste is made from sugar, and the strawberry flavor is made from refined chemicals. As sad as it may sound, but the fact that the product has a fruity taste does not mean that it really contains fruit.

However, the good news is that more and more companies are using natural ingredients. Therefore, it is better to purchase products from such proven manufacturers, even if you have to spend a few rubles more.

6. Bread

What would you say if there was hair in your food that you didn’t know about? The amino acid «L-cysteine» is added to ensure the smoothness of the dough for industrial buns, bread and cakes. And this happens either by fermentation from bacterial cultures, or, for example, the ingredients are extracted from human hair. In China, there are so-called hair pickers who sweep shorn hair in hairdressers and sell it to large bakeries.

The use of human hair in baking is now banned in Europe, but the food industry has found a replacement in pig bristles, horse hooves and chicken feathers. And it doesn’t sound any more appetizing.

7. Fish

The food industry also uses tricks for fish. Those who think they eat red fish are usually mistaken. Since the alleged Alaskan pollock does not exist, it is actually a cod. But due to the fact that it did not sell so well, in the 1980s the food industry renamed it saida. However, this clever marketing trick has a catch: cod does not eat crustaceans, so its meat does not have the desired salmon-red color. Therefore, the industry uses a dye to achieve a pink color. Among other things, the same cochineal red A is used, which again raises great doubts.

When buying frozen fish, be sure to pay attention to the exact labeling. In order not to make a mistake when choosing fresh fish, make sure that it does not have cloudy eyes and bright red gills.

8. Fruits and vegetables

In the supermarket, fruits and vegetables are usually perfectly flawless in color and size. Bright red peppers of the same size get their attractive appearance due to the intensive use of pesticides and chemical growth regulators, which will definitely be harmful to health. However, the good news is that 97% of food products do not contain pesticide residues above the maximum level.
However, caution should be exercised with sprayed fruits and vegetables, because the general rules on the maximum limits of pesticides have a loophole: the so-called «pesticide cocktails». The trick of the food industry is to use cocktails with various pesticides, the content of each of which is slightly below the limit. In general, however, there is a certain concentration of toxins that can cause harmful interactions with each other.
If something looks good, it does not mean that the product tastes good or healthy. The food industry has many secrets that no one wants to understand.
